Aizkorri Natural Park

Ascent to Aizkorri

The ascent to Aizkorri takes approximately two hours. It is recommended to start the hike in the morning. Before setting off, a visit to the Interpretation Center of the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, located in the village of Zegama, is highly recommended. There, the staff will provide you with maps, explanations, and GPS routes, and they are very friendly and welcoming.

There are two main routes to ascend Aizkorri:

  1. From the Hermitage of Sancti Spiritu: This is the most direct and well-marked route. Before reaching the tunnel, follow the yellow markers, which also correspond to the famous mountain marathon trail. You will reach the summit in less than two hours, with an elevation gain between 1,000 and 1,500 meters.
  2. From the San Adrián Tunnel: This route starts to the right of the tunnel, following a path marked with white and yellow signs, corresponding to the official Short Distance Trail (PR).

Recommendations

If you decide to climb in summer, it’s a fantastic plan to enjoy the spectacular views and sunset from the summit. You can also choose to spend the night at the refuge, which is open and has no services or bunks. The refuge can accommodate 6 to 8 people, so it is essential to bring your sleeping bag and mat, as the floor is concrete.

A very peaceful hotel to disconnect. The staff is very attentive and helpful. Daniela is such a sweetheart, always attentive and ready to recommend places to visit — truly charming. The food was exquisite, a 10! Those croquettes… ummm! I’d definitely come back. Thanks to all the hotel staff. Greetings and big hugs from a girl from the Canary Islands.

The friendliest hotel staff I’ve ever met. Daniela is pure charm and sweetness, and Jon gives you incredible tips on places to visit and where to park. I’ll recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Basque Country, and if I ever return, I’ll definitely stay again. The breakfasts and dinners were fabulous. In short, a 10 out of 10.

Wonderful stay at the hotel: very comfortable and clean beds. TV and A/C were perfect for comfort. Storage space was great, although the hangers were very old. Lighting was excellent. The bathroom was very clean, although there were no towel hooks for the shower.
