Climbing

The Goierri region is an exciting destination for climbing enthusiasts, with several areas in the town of Ataun offering rocks and cliffs ideal for sport climbing. This natural environment features several fully equipped climbing schools, totaling 250 open routes with varying levels of difficulty, allowing climbers of all abilities to enjoy the adventure.

The main climbing areas include:

  • Jentilbaratza
  • Aizkorrandi
  • Haitzartea
  • Lizarrusti

It is important to note that in Aizkorrandi, climbing is only allowed from July to November, as this area serves as a nesting and sheltering site for vultures and other protected birds.

Additionally, in Ataun, you can explore the Ataun Dome, an impressive geological formation created when lower-density rocks rise up, breaking through denser rock layers. This plateau includes the mountains of Jentilbaratza, Aizkoate, Aizkorrandi, Arastortz, Agautz, Leizadi, Asundi, Loibideko Mailoak, and Ikarandieta, locally known as Aitzarte.

To enjoy panoramic views of the Dome, the summit of Mount Arantzazumendi, on the border between Ataun and Idiazabal, is an ideal spot.

To ensure the preservation of local flora and fauna, climbing is restricted to certain months and areas. Climbing is not allowed on the walls of Sastarri, Aizkoate, Intzartzu, Artzateaitza, or the Ataun Dome, except in the surroundings of the Aitzarte Climbing School.

If you are new to climbing or want to improve your skills, you can hire a specialized guide service to accompany you, whether for an introduction to sport climbing or for more advanced climbing activities.

After your climbing adventure, you can relax at Hotel Salbatore, located in Beasain. This cozy hotel offers 14 comfortable rooms and a delicious continental breakfast to start your day with energy before exploring all the wonders that Goierri and its surroundings have to offer.

A very peaceful hotel to disconnect. The staff is very attentive and helpful. Daniela is such a sweetheart, always attentive and ready to recommend places to visit — truly charming. The food was exquisite, a 10! Those croquettes… ummm! I’d definitely come back. Thanks to all the hotel staff. Greetings and big hugs from a girl from the Canary Islands.

The friendliest hotel staff I’ve ever met. Daniela is pure charm and sweetness, and Jon gives you incredible tips on places to visit and where to park. I’ll recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Basque Country, and if I ever return, I’ll definitely stay again. The breakfasts and dinners were fabulous. In short, a 10 out of 10.

Wonderful stay at the hotel: very comfortable and clean beds. TV and A/C were perfect for comfort. Storage space was great, although the hangers were very old. Lighting was excellent. The bathroom was very clean, although there were no towel hooks for the shower.
