Discover the most authentic landscapes of inland Gipuzkoa by following the Idiazabal Cheese Route, also known as GR-283. This exciting circular mountain route, designed to be completed in one week, invites you to explore the cultural, scenic, and gastronomic wealth of the region.
Covering 95.7 kilometers across 6 stages, the route traverses the regions of Goierri, Alto Urola, and Alto Deba. With a cumulative elevation of 9,777 meters (4,920 meters positive and 4,857 meters negative), it is accessible to anyone with moderate physical fitness and requires no specialized equipment. The shortest stage is 12 kilometers long, while the longest reaches 22.93 kilometers.
The route will take you through the stunning Natural Parks of Aralar and Aizkorri-Aratz, home to the Latxa sheep, essential for producing the renowned Idiazabal Cheese. You'll discover its production process, from lush pastures to cheese dairies and traditional markets like the famous Ordizia market. And, of course, you'll visit the village of Idiazabal, which gives its name to this special cheese.
The route connects towns such as Beasain, Ordizia, Zaldibia, Legazpi, and Oñati, offering breathtaking views of Txindoki (also known as the "Basque Matterhorn") and other iconic landscapes.
The GR-283 is not just a mountain trail; it is an immersion into the tradition, gastronomy, and natural beauty of the heart of Gipuzkoa. Walk along historic paths, engage directly with local producers, and take home a unique experience that blends sport, culture, and unparalleled scenery.

Simple hotel, perfect for sleeping and resting — no need to ask for more. Extraordinary people, very kind and highly professional, great dining service. Ideal location if you want to explore the Basque Country, just an hour's drive from all major sites. I’ll be back.
A very peaceful hotel to disconnect. The staff is very attentive and helpful. Daniela is such a sweetheart, always attentive and ready to recommend places to visit — truly charming. The food was exquisite, a 10! Those croquettes… ummm! I’d definitely come back. Thanks to all the hotel staff. Greetings and big hugs from a girl from the Canary Islands.
The friendliest hotel staff I’ve ever met. Daniela is pure charm and sweetness, and Jon gives you incredible tips on places to visit and where to park. I’ll recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Basque Country, and if I ever return, I’ll definitely stay again. The breakfasts and dinners were fabulous. In short, a 10 out of 10.
We went to this hotel for a tournament. The staff was the best — super friendly and lovely, they treated us wonderfully. The restaurant surprised us: good food with generous portions at an affordable price. Clean and comfortable rooms.
Wonderful stay at the hotel: very comfortable and clean beds. TV and A/C were perfect for comfort. Storage space was great, although the hangers were very old. Lighting was excellent. The bathroom was very clean, although there were no towel hooks for the shower.
