Txindoki

Mount Txindoki: The Jewel of the Aralar Range

Txindoki, also known as Larrunarri or Ñañarri, is one of the most iconic mountains of the Aralar Range, standing 1,346 meters tall. Situated on the border between Gipuzkoa (Basque Country) and Navarre, it holds immense natural, cultural, and mythological significance.

Features and Geography

Often called the "Basque Matterhorn" due to its sharp limestone peak, Txindoki stands out with its striking presence. From its summit, one can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, making it a landmark in the Basque-Navarre landscape. At its base, the Chapel of Our Lady of Remedies at the Larraitz Sanctuary serves as a local pilgrimage site.

The mountain is characterized by limestone terrain rich in rock formations, alternating with native oak, beech, and hawthorn forests, and livestock grazing meadows. As you ascend, the landscape gradually takes on the features of a karst environment, with rocky outcrops and small shepherd shelters hidden among the valleys.

Wildlife

Txindoki is home to species such as wild boars, deer, and, with some luck, wolves. In the skies above, vultures, crows, and various birds of prey can be seen, making the area a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

Myths and Legends

Txindoki is one of the dwellings of Mari, the most important goddess in Basque mythology. According to legend, Mari resides at the summit of this mountain, overseeing the surrounding lands. This divine connection gives Txindoki a powerful symbolic and mystical presence, particularly evident when observing its silhouette from the neighboring valleys.

Ascent Routes

1. Normal Route (from Larraitz): The most common route starts from the Larraitz parking area and ascends the mountain from the north side. After passing Gaztesuiko langa, the path climbs towards Egurra pass, where it becomes steeper until reaching the summit. Estimated duration: 2 hours.

2. Route via Muitze: Also starting from Larraitz, this variant takes a detour at Gaztesuiko langa toward the Urtzabal meadows, crossing Mallaki and reaching the grassy amphitheater of Muitze. From there, it ascends through the Arrategorri pass and connects to the normal route at Egurra pass. Estimated time: 2 hours 30 minutes.

3. Route along the Base of the Ridge: Starting from Larraitz, this route heads toward the rocky base at Ameztiko and then follows the ridge up to the summit. The ascent is steep but offers impressive views along the way. Estimated duration: 2 hours.

Accessibility

  • Normal route (from Larraitz): 2 hours
  • Route via Muitze: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Route along the ridge base: 2 hours

Txindoki is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding mountains in the Basque Country and Navarre, notable for both its natural beauty and its cultural and mythological importance. It is an ideal destination for hikers, climbers, and nature lovers, as well as a strong symbol of Basque identity.

Wonderful stay at the hotel: very comfortable and clean beds. TV and A/C were perfect for comfort. Storage space was great, although the hangers were very old. Lighting was excellent. The bathroom was very clean, although there were no towel hooks for the shower.
